Q. How long has the Academy of Construction
& Design at Cardozo High School been operating?
A. The Academy opened in September 2005.
Q. What training programs are offered at the academy?
A. Currently, training programs are available in
carpentry, electrical and HVACR trade specialties. Plumbing and
masonry classes will be added in the 2009-10 school year.
Q. How do I become a student at the Academy?
A. District students in grades 10, 11 or 12 may
apply for admission to the Academy.
Q. What is the enrollment deadline?
A. Applications for enrollment are accepted throughout
the year; however, applications for the start of the upcoming school
year are due by mid-April. Please contact us for dates and information.
Q. What are the admission requirements?
A. Students must be entering grades 10, 11 or 12
with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and have good conduct. Applications
must include a written essay of 100 words or more, a copy of the
student’s official transcript, and three (3) letters of recommendation:
two from current teachers and one from the current school counselor.
If application is accepted, the student will be scheduled for an
in-person interview.
Q. Can I go to another school and attend
the Academy of Construction & Design?
A. No. Students in the Academy of Construction
& Design must attend Cardozo Senior High School. Any student
accepted into the Academy will also be accepted for enrollment at
Cardozo Senior High.
Q. How much time do students spend in
the Academy?
A. Students study in the Academy for one period
each day and attend academic classes with all other Cardozo students
during the remainder of the school day. Special training sessions,
construction site visits and field trips may also be scheduled throughout
the year.
